Brown Sugar

If you run out of brown sugar and don’t want to go to the store. Or maybe the store is out because everyone in the world is baking right now. Either way, making it isn’t hard.

When I started reading ingredients for everything, I was shocked at what I found. Powdered sugar contains corn starch. Now that I’ve been doing this for a while, I know it’s to keep it from clumping. It’s not surprising that companies need to make everything look “pretty” for us. We demand it. But it isn’t always healthy.

When I looked at brown sugar, the ingredient was…brown sugar. But that doesn’t make sense. What IS brown sugar? After a little bit of digging, I found out it’s just sugar and molasses.

Ever since, I’ve been making it myself. I have no actual recipe. The more molasses you add, the more it becomes “dark brown sugar.” If you add less, it’s “light brown sugar.”

Happy baking!

Blender

A blender is easier than a food processor, but it’s possible to use either one. If yours only has a blade on the bottom, I suggest just doing 1 cup at a time.

Ingredients to make brown sugar: sugar and molasses.

You’ll be tempted to use a lot of sugar, but don’t. Start small, you can always add more.

Slowly add molasses while blending, if possible. If not, add about 1/2-1 Tablespoon at a time, then blend.

Occasionally, stop and push down the sides.

Beautiful brown sugar!

PRO TIP: Put about an inch of hot water and a small squirt of dish soap in the blender.

Turn on and let run. The bubbles will slowly get higher…

…and higher…

Until they go all the way to the top. This only takes about 30-45-ish seconds.

You still will want to wash the blender, but it is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH easier!

Done!
